Dr. Marcello Calisti has a BSc in mechanical engineering, MSc in biomedical engineering and a PhD in biorobotics. He is currently Assistant Professor at the BioRobotics Institute of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna.
He studies biomechanics and control of underwater animals to extract fundamental principles which can be harnessed to develop new breeds of robot. He participated in the early development of soft robotics by taking as a reference octopus, and now he is leading a research effort toward the development of underwater legged robots inspired by crabs.
He has collaborated on several European and national projects related to robotics, and was a National Geographic Society Early Career Grantee with the SILVER project. He is currently Principal Investigator of the project GOLD (funded by National Geographic Society) and of the Blue Resolution project (funded by Arbi Dario spa), which have the goal of enriching our knowledge of the ocean and to undertake cleaning actions of the seabed.
